Alternative Care & Remote Learning Program
Y-COP’s Alternative Care and Learning Program answered a parent’s most pressing concern. With schools closed during the COVID-19 outbreak and the uncertainty of when in-person schooling could occur, the staff at Y-COP managed to cultivate a system that met the needs of both parents and children.
With the cooperation and support of the First United Methodist Church, where the program operates daily, parents dropped their children off at the Alternative Care and Learning Program Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. to prepare for a full day of schoolwork. The program was designed to assist school-aged children with their virtual learning assignments, help them stay focused, and provide educational and technical assistance as they do their coursework. With a total of 15 students enrolled and at least six different schools to navigate, the staff, under the supervision of Team Leader, Amirah Roberts, went above and beyond to ensure the kids stay on task. Breakfast and lunch were prepared and served daily by a dedicated group of caring volunteers. Whenever necessary, extra homework and tutoring were provided. Melissa, a parent with two boys in the program says, “Even when the schools do reopen fully, my kids will remain here, I trust it here.”
When the school day was over, the kids went into an after-school component, where enrichment and recreational activities were offered such as soccer, gaga ball, arts & crafts classes, and youth fitness.
All state government-mandated protocols are followed to maintain the health and safety of children and staff.
